Yoga is for everyone, regardless of your flexibility, fitness level or age!

Many beginners worry about not being flexible enough or to old to start practising yoga. The truth is that yoga helps you to develop flexibility over time and anyone can begin to exercise at any age. It's about connecting your body, breath, and mind rather than achieving difficult or dangerous poses. Whether you're a complete novice or looking to deepen your practice, remember; all you need is an open mind and a willingness to learn to gradually become more flexible, tuned and mindfully relaxed.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice that combines physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), meditation, and ethical principles. Originating in India over 5,000 years ago, yoga aims to harmonise the body, mind, and spirit to overcome body tension during prolonged periods of meditation. In our busy day-to-day life, we can adapt these proven methods to aid our bodies to counteract the impacts of prolonged sitting and working on computers, or driving long distances, etc. Yoga promots overall well-being, reduces tension and stress, aids stability and focus.

Why Practice Yoga?

  1. Physical Health: Yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and balance. It can improve posture and reduce the risk of injury and is valuable especially to those later in life.

  2. Mental Clarity: Regular practice helps clear the mind, improve focus and alleviate stress and anxiety.

  3. Emotional Balance: Yoga encourages self-awareness and emotional resilience whilst helping you manage life's ups and downs more effectively.

  4. Community and Connection: Joining a yoga class fosters a sense of belonging and support among fellow practitioners in a non-judgemental environment.

Getting Started: Tips for Beginners

  1. Listen to Your Body: Yoga is not about pushing your limits but about finding balance. Pay attention to your body’s signals, don’t hesitate to modify poses and use supportive props as needed. Allow your body time to become acquainted with the routines practised and you will advance naturally.

  2. Practice Mindfulness: Focus on your breathing to control your pain, emotions and/or heart-rate, as well as level of anxiety. Cultivate awareness in your practise so that this mindfulness can extend beyond the mat and into your everyday life.

  3. Stay Consistent: Aim to practise regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. Consistency is key to experiencing the full benefits of yoga.

  4. Be Patient and Kind to Yourself: Yoga is a journey, not a destination. Embrace where you are and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

Common Myths About Yoga

  • You Need to Be Flexible: Many beginners worry about their flexibility. Yoga is about improving flexibility over time, not starting with it.

  • It’s Only for Women: Yoga is for everyone, regardless of gender, age, or fitness level.

  • You Have to Perform Difficult Poses: Yoga has many styles and practise options; find a practise that feels good for you! You are in conrol of your moves, whether it's a vigorous class, a more gentle flow or holding poses for a longer time. There are options for people who can only participate seated on a chair.
